Acne scars are an embarrassing reminder of acne breakouts that everybody wants to get rid of. There are many ointments and treatments available to remove this unsightly blemish. But before you can apply the proper remedy, it is best that you are familiar with the different kind of acne scars.
Acne scars can either be depressed or keloid. Depressed scar is the more common type. Loss of tissue in the spot of the acne becomes a depressed scar. On the other hand, a group of tissue that forms on the site of the acne becomes keloid.
There are three types of depressed scars namely, icepick, boxcar, and rolling. Icepick scars are deep ones that go all the way to the subcutaneous layer of the skin. It requires sophisticated treatments like laser and dermabrasion. It is called icepick because the mark looks like an icepick has been stabbed on it.
Acne scars that appear to be swelling are called rolling scars. Subcision technique is needed to get rid of rolling scars. The method breaks up the subcutaneous fibrous bands of the skin using a special needle.
Boxcar scars are not as deep as the icepick scar but it has sharp edges. Its shape is usually round or oval. Boxcar scar are treated using conventional skin resurfacing techniques punch excision. The procedure may include skin grafting.
Other safe scar treatments one can try are dermal fillers and laser resurfacing. Dermal filler injects fat, bovine collagen, human collagen, hyaluronic acid derivatives, and polytheyl-methacrylate microspheres with collagen into acne scars.
The injected material raises the surface of the skin and smoothen the skin. The epidermal layer of skin is burned to a specific depth in laser resurfacing. The healing will follow the natural regeneration process.
